Community Outreach

Mission: To coordinate the efforts of OHSU Family Medicine with individuals and communities outside the department to effectively promote and facilitate teaching, healing and discovery.
Goals:
 To promote interest in and service to rural, underserved and vulnerable populations
To reach out to providers and communities across the state providing information, services and support
To reach out to providers and communities across the state providing them with opportunities to collaborate with and support the activities of the Department
To conduct collaborative research addressing problems of importance to the people of Oregon.
The OHSU Family Medicine recognizes its position as a leader in medical education, community oriented research and the delivery of quality care. To achieve these goals the Community Development and Outreach Program of OHSU Family Medicine will partner with communities, other agencies, practicing physicians and other interested partners in service to the communities and citizens of Oregon.
The Community Medicine and Outreach Program participates in numerous activities in six areas related to the mission of OHSU Family Medicine:

Volunteer Faculty Development Programs
Anita D. Taylor, M.A.Ed., is the Director of the Volunteer Faculty Development program. The goals of the Volunteer Faculty Development Program in the Department of Family Medicine are to improve teaching skills and provide opportunities for volunteer faculty to socialize and maintain a connection with our department.
This program provides instruction for the many volunteer faculty who provide teaching for OHSU medical students and residents. Through this program, volunteer faculty will receive skills in teaching and evaluating learners.
Volunteer Faculty Development Sessions
Each year at the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians Annual Scientific Assembly and Congress of Delegates the Department of Family Medicine will hold a statewide faculty meeting and luncheon. During this meeting, volunteer faculty will be apprised of current activities in the Department of Family Medicine. This meeting will also provide a forum for faculty throughout the state to give feedback to departmental faculty and discuss future needs and directions for faculty development. This statewide faculty meeting will be followed by a two hour faculty development session tailored to the needs of volunteer faculty. The first such session was held on May 11, 2000 and was titled "Professional and Career Vitality."
Faculty Development Periodic Visits
Faculty from the Department of Family Medicine provide periodic visits to residents and student teaching sites around the state of Oregon. During these visits, there are individual and group meetings with the physicians and office staff members.
Visiting Faculty of the Day
Family physician can come to the Department of Family Medicine offices on the OHSU campus and spend the day in clinical and teaching activities. This would include morning report, rounding with the hospital inpatient team, precepting residents in the clinic and participating in student teaching activities available that day.
The Visiting Faculty of the Day could involve approximately 300 family physicians each year - one a day weekdays.
Speaker for Continuing Medical Education Program
We welcome family physicians offering to participate in the departmental CME offerings or resident conferences.
Statewide Practice-Based Evidence-Based Medical Clinical studies Program
We are seeking family physicians interested in planning and implementing a statewide practice-based evidence-based clinical studies program so that a network of scholarly activity can be formed.
Regional Area Health Education Center I(AHEC) Boards
We are seeking family physicians to serve on regional AHEC boards in their part of the state.
