Sealants - by John A. Burkhart, D.M.D.

A sealant is a safe, plastic coating that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth - premolars and molars. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and groves - pits and fissures - of the chewing surfaces. These pits and fissures are impossible to keep clean because the bristles of a toothbrush are too big to reach into them (see picture 1).

Sealants, if used, could prevent up to 80% of all cavities in young molars. They are easy to apply and no drills or needles are involved (pictures 2-3).
