1. Show your patient the area of concern (lesion)

Explain who will be coming for the consult

  • What is an Oral Pathologist
  • We may take clinical photos
  • We may do special tests - ie cytology
  • We may refer/confer with other specialties - OMFS, Endo, Perio, Radiology

2. Ask your overseeing instructor (dentist) : If this is your patient in private practice.."Exactly, what would you do for him/her? " & "What would you tell your patient?"

  • (If they are unable to provide you with this information, we invite them to attend the consult as well)

3. Call the Department of Pathology 4-8904

You must provide the following to the person who
takes your call :

  • Your full name
  • Name of Clinical Staff you are working with
  • Your year ie DS III, DH IV , grad perio (Dental Student/ Hygiene Student / Grad Student)
  • Where we can find you - chair # & clinic
  • Patient's name
  • Patient's chart number
  • Some idea of urgency of consult

4. If a pathologist is available, one or more of us will come to clinic ASAP. Keep working until we get there.

  • Office staff will give you some idea of availability.

5. On our arrival, we will expect:

A. Introduction to the patient (preferably sitting the patient up)

  • Dr. Kratochvil (Kratovil)
  • Dr. Yih (Yee)
  • Dr. Stewart (Stew ert)

B. Brief synopsis of the patient's medical circumstances.

  • Please remember the crowded nature of the clinic and patient confidentiality.

C. Description of the lesion

  • Write this down as a chart entry on day sheet (pink). We will make our notes following yours or on the interdepartmental consult page (yellow)
    • clinical: location, size, shape, color, morphology
    • radiograph:
      • above plus
        • r'lucent/r'opaque/mixed
        • association with normal structures

D. A summary of what your instructor would do if this was their patient in private practice

E. Differential Diagnosis !! ­ Your (& instructors) best "guess"

What you and/or the clinical staff think the lesion might be, and what approach the overseeing clinician would take in her/his private practice
