Chairman/Graduate Program Director's Notes
The seventh annual OHSU Endodontic Alumni and Friends Reception will be hosted in Philadelphia. The reception provides an opportunity to renew old friendships and make new OHSU friends. Last year in Honolulu over 70 alumni, friends, and their guests were in attendance at the OHSU reception. Membership in OHSU Endodontic Alumni and Friends is $125 and annual renewal is $125. Copies of the residents’ abstracts of classic literature will be available on CD beginning in June. We need your membership dues to fund the annual reception, newsletter, and logo memorabilia. Lapel pins are available at no charge if you have not received one. A baseball cap inscribed with OHSU ENDO is available for $20.
Many thanks to our alumni and friends who have supported our Endodontology Discretionary Fund #13653 and the Les Morgan Endowment Fund #12218. We have surpassed our goal for the Morgan Endowment which is now over $380,000. Each year approximately 5% of the principle becomes available to support the residents’ research, consultants, and travel to the Annual AAE Meeting.
As you all know, we have launched a campaign called the Endowment for Excellence in Endodontics. We need the support of all alumni and friends to maintain the Department of Endodontology.
F. James Marshall has continued to spend time with the incoming residents and helps them with case presentations. Aaron Welk and Randy Heiman recently joined our endodontic faculty. Aaron received both his DMD and his Certificate of specialty training in Endodontics from OHSU. He instructs in both the predoctoral and postdoctoral clinics. Randy received his DMD from OHSU but received his Certificate of specialty training in Endodontics from the University of Nebraska. He instructs in the freshman lab and in the predoctoral clinic.
Current research projects by the 2nd year residents: Tung Bui– “Duribiity of Electropolished NiTi Instruments,” Traci Zilinski – Obturation of Grooves and Depressions Using GuttaFlow vs. Gutta Percha.” and Ben Nielsen –“Comparison of the EndoVac System to Needle Irrigation of Root Canals”.
Consultants for the residents this year included: Consultants for the residents this year included: Steve Buchanan, John Fraser, Doug Luiten, Donna Mattcheck, George Bogan, Rich Mounce, Rick Walton, Markus Haapasalo, Joe Camp, and Anil Kishen. In addition the residents enjoy -- "Mess of the Week" - Bill Girsch , “Learning with Barker - Dale Barker, and Lunch N learning – Bill Beeler.
Congratulations to our most recent graduates of the residency program. David Wilson is practicing in Pocatella, Idaho, Nicole Karr in Los Angeles, and John Johnson is in Portland.
This year in Philadelphia Ben Nielsen will present his abstract -–“Comparison of the EndoVac System to Needle Irrigation of Root Canals” and David Wilson will present “Microbial Leakage of Roots Filled with Resilon”. Other abstracts from OHSU are:”Evaluation of the ModuPRO for In-vitro Measurement of Electronic Length” S.W. Hansen, L., Musanje, L., T.N. Nguyen, M. Kashkouli; “In Vitro Evaluation of the Accuracy of the Mini Apex Locator” S. W. Hansen*, L. Musanje, T. N. Nguyen, M. Kashkouli; and “Effect of File Size on the Accuracy of Three Electronic Apex Locators” L. Musanje*, M. Kashkouli, S. W. Hansen, T. N. Nguyen.
Congratulations to last year’s graduates for passing the written portion of the ABE exam. This year the 2nd year endodontic residents will be able to take the written exam in June before graduation. I hope more endodontists from OHSU will pursue ABE Board Certification. We continue to give ABE type oral exams each spring to the residents. Dale Barker (Gresham, OR), directed the oral exam and the examiners were: Kevin Christiansen (Salem), Dale Barker (Portland) Doug Luiten (Anchorage, AK), and Jay Jacobson (El Cajon, CA). Jay received ABE certification last year so he has recent knowledge that will help the residents better prepare for the process of getting “Board Certified” in endodontics.
The Endodontic Admissions Committee (Baumgartner, Barker, Beeler, Marshall, and Tinkle) had over 60 experienced clinicians applying for the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics. In addition to this year’s fellow, Michael Wheatley (San Rafael, CA), Hong Li (Federal Way, WA), and Ryan Lavene (Rodondo Beach, CA) will be the incoming residents on July 1, 2006. The incoming fellow will be Leila Tarsa (Carlsbad, CA). This year’s 1st year residents are: Benjamin Nielsen (Las Vegas, NV), Tracie Zielinski (San Diego, CA), and Tung Bui (Toronto, ONT). The 2nd year residents are planning on the following sites for endodontic practice: Nicole Karr (Los Angeles), John Johnson (Houston or Portland), and David Wilson (Pocatello, ID).
The F. James Marshall Endodontic Study Group had another outstanding group of presenters that included Marc Balsom, Jeff Stewart, and John Smith. Coming to Sun River in the fall will be Fred Barnett speaking on “Controversies in Endodontics.”
H.L. Jay Jacobson, III - Latest Diplomate of ABE
Jay took the oral exam to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics (ABE) during the annual meeting of the AAE in Hawaii. Congratulations to Jay for passing the ABE oral exam and becoming the latest “Dip” from our Endodontic Residency Program here at OHSU. He graduated in the class of 2000 and is currently practicing in El Cajon, CA with Robert Bravin and Gene Sigita. His immediate family consists of his wife Kathy and daughters Elizabeth and Kristin. With the “boards” behind him he will have more time for his hobbies that include, “All types of fishing, working out at the gym,
designing computers, chemistry, camping with my family, and our annual vacations with my wife's side of the family.” Jay is active with the Lions Club, and he spends Tuesdays at Loma Linda University teaching the undergraduate students and mentoring the endodontic residents. Jay also reviews articles for the Journal of Endodontics, works on the California Peer Review Committee, and presents CE courses through the University and his local dental society.
Jay has some advice for those planning on getting “board certified”. He recommends that you take the written exam as soon as you can during the final days of the program or during the first six months following graduation. Do not plan on using your cases from OHSU, but you may get lucky with recalls. Start documenting potential cases the minute you get out of the residency, and try to get a one year recall film on any potential cases ASAP. The directions the Board gives you for your portfolio are easy to follow and quite explicit. If you follow them with a mentor, you should not have any problems passing the first time. For the oral exam, give yourself at least six months to get everything together, and review, review, review! A review course is also a must before the oral exam. With good organization and some work, you too can be a “Dip”.
Endowment for Excellence
Endodontics education is in crisis nationally and at OHSU as many faculty are at or reaching retirement age. A recent national study reported that 270 full-time and 26 part-time positions were currently unfilled in the 52 reporting dental schools.
To maintain the size and caliber of our endodontic faculty and to compete with other schools to attract the best faculty from a diminishing pool of candidates, we need a stable and ongoing source of funding for our endodontic education programs. The difficulty in replacing faculty surfaced when fulltime
endodontic faculty members Jim Tinkle and Bill Beeler recently
retired. Luckily, Dr. Baumgartner was able to recruit Tuong Nguyen to the department as a fulltime
instructor, and to encourage Jim & Bill to return on a part-time
basis. Recruitment and retention of endodontic faculty in the future will be very difficult without a significant increase in faculty salaries.
At current salaries, endodontists who want to teach are driven to private practice because of the disparity of income. To help recruit top-notch endodontic educators to OHSU and encourage them to stay, a group of endodontic alums have initiated a $2 million fundraising effort to build an endowment for salary enhancement of the endodontic faculty above the basic salary levels provided by the School of Dentistry.
“The Endowment for Excellence in Endodontics will provide a vital recruiting tool to the dental school as it competes on the national playing field for faculty leaders who can carry on our tradition of endodontic excellence,” said Madonna Wilson, Director of Development for the School of Dentistry.
“Endodontics is at a crossroads in Oregon and in the nation. We are hoping our endodontic alumni and friends will help us ensure a future of excellence for our Department of Endodontology by giving something back to their profession.” Initial gifts from several generous alumni of the Endodontic Residency Program have gotten the Endowment for Excellence in Endodontics off to a good start with pledges already over $200,000. To maintain this momentum, OHSU is hoping for pledges from all endodontic alumni and friends of the department.
The fundraising committee for the Endowment for Excellence in Endodontics includes endodontics alums and friends Ardy Overby, Clayton Stearns, John Fraser, Douglas Luiten, Allan Liesinger, and Bill Girsch.
For more information about giving, call Pat Regan in the development office at the School of Dentistry 503-494-0980.

Jim Tinkle – 2006 John C. Peterson Alumnus of the Year
Our very own “Tink” was named the OHSU School of Dentistry’s Alumnus of the Year at the Alumni Luncheon April 8, 2006. This honor is given in recognition of sustained contributions to the School, organized dentistry and one’s community. As many of you know, Jim graduated from OHSU in 1979 and essentially never left. In the years since, along with getting his Endo Certificate in ’86 he has taught in no less than four different departments; Endo, Oral Diagnosis, Dental Materials, and Behavioral Sciences. He has won an almost embarrassing number of awards voted on by students for his teaching
abilities. These include ’87 and ’88 Best Part-Time Instructor, ’95 Outstanding Clinical
Instructor, ’99 and ’01 Outstanding Didactic Instructor. He has twice been nominated for the OHSU Faculty Senate Teaching Award in ’00 and ’04. Last year he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Oregon Academy of General Dentistry, the first time this award has been presented to a specialist. Jim’s service has extended far beyond his amazing teaching abilities and his being the face of under-grad Endo for over twenty years. He has consistently been willing to tackle the thankless jobs that are necessary to ensure the vitality and evolution of both our school and our profession. He was our Alumni Liaison from
’99-’04, he served on the dental school’s admission committee for 16 years, and since 1991 he has been the OHSU Faculty Representative for the American Dental Education Association. He has also been a consultant to the Western Regional Examining Board. As you may also be aware, even though he’s retired Jim is so valuable a member of the department we still make him come in halftime. So next time you see him give Jim a big “Attaboy” and buy him an adult beverage of his choice. Congratulations “JT!”
