> Giving Opportunities
It is through
the generosity of our alumni and friends that we are able to continue
the tradition of clinical excellence that distinguishes the OHSU
School of Dentistry from other institutions. Financial support benefits
the School by providing needed funding for scholarships, facilities
enhancement, advances in dental education and teaching technology.
There
are many ways you can make a gift to the School of Dentistry.

Planned
Gifts
Planned gifts are significant gifts that involve careful planning
in light of a person’s financial and estate circumstances.
These are called deferred gifts because the benefit for OHSU is
deferred until sometime in the future, although the donor benefits
immediately from the gift plan. These life income gift plans offer
you, or someone you designate, an income for life, an immediate
income tax deduction for the donor and potential estate planning
benefits.
Gift
Annuities.
Provide fixed payment for the life of one or two individuals. Amount
of the annual payment is based on age of the income beneficiaries
at the time of the gift (the older the recipient, the larger the
payout rate). Part of the income may be tax-free. $5,000 minimum
for participation.
Pooled
Income Fund. Gifts
from many donors are pooled for investment purposes. Each donor
receives a pro rata share of the earnings each year. $5,000 minimum
for participation.
Charitable
Remainder Unitrust.
Especially for appreciated assets and real estate. An irrevocable
trust that provides an income for the donor(s) life or up to 20
years. Provides a variable income based on a percentage of the annual
value of the trust assets as determined each year. $50,000 minimum
for participation.
Charitable
Remainder Annuity Trusts.
Excellent for older donors with appreciated stock. An irrevocable
trust that pays a fixed dollar amount each year for the donor(s)
life or up to 20 years. $50,000 minimum for participation.
Charitable
Lead Trusts.
A trust that provides distributions to OHSU Foundation to benefit
the School of Dentistry for a certain number of years. In most cases,
the principal is then distributed to your children or other heirs
at greatly reduced gift and estate tax rates.
Life
Estate Gifts.
It may be advantageous to donate your residence, farm, or vacation
home now and reserve the right to live in the home or use the property
for life. You can receive an income tax deduction now, and retain
the right to enjoy and use the property for the rest of your life.
Estate
Gifts. Many
friends of the School of Dentistry have provided significant support
through their estate plans. A bequest can also be made through a
living trust. Naming the School of Dentistry as a beneficiary in
your will entitles you to membership in our Sam Jackson Guild. It
is important to consult with your attorney to determine whether
your charitable bequest can be made by drafting a codicil to your
existing will or if a new will is needed.

Gifts
by Check
Please make checks payable to the OHSU Foundation and, if you wish,
designate the specific School of Dentistry program you want to support.
Undesignated or unrestricted gifts will go to the area of greatest
need within the School. Checks must be mailed and postmarked by
December 31st to be tax-deductible in that year.
Gifts
by Credit Card
To make a gift by credit card, please call Monday through Friday
between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (Pacific time zone): 503-494-0983. Gifts
by credit card are tax-deductible in the year the card is charged.
Gifts
of Property and Goods (Gifts in Kind)
Antiques, art, boats and other items may be excellent gifts. If
the item can be used by the School of Dentistry (office equipment
or library books for example), then its full fair market value may
be deducted. If the item will most likely be sold by the foundation,
or the university cannot use it in its normal operations, the deduction
is limited to the cost basis of the item. For more information on
gifts of property and goods, please call our department of planned
giving at 503-228-1730 or email hunsingd@ohsu.edu.
Pledges
Making a pledge to the School allows you to make installment payments
on your gift. Monthly or annual pledges are available. For more
information on this type of gift, contact the Director of Development,
503-494-0980 or email reganp@ohsu.edu
Gifts
of Real Estate
A gift of a residence, vacation home or investment property can
provide significant resources to the School while maximizing tax
benefits for the donor. To find out more about making a gift of
real estate, please call our department of planned giving at 503-228-1730
or email hunsingd@ohsu.edu.
Gifts
of Stock
Gifts of stock provide a double tax benefit for donors: You can
deduct the full fair market value of your appreciated stock, not
just what you originally paid, and you save again by avoiding all
capital gains taxes on your “Paper Profit.” Benefit
your area of choice in the School, or give to the area of greatest
need by making an unrestricted gift. For more information on giving
a gift of stock, please call our department of planned giving at
503-228-1730 or email hunsingd@ohsu.edu.
