Dentists and their staffs have an ethical and medicolegal obligation to be able to recognize and appropriately respond to these emergencies. This course will review the prevention, diagnosis and management of common medical emergencies in the dental office. This course is intended to provide dental health care providers with a succinct review of the latest information on the pharmacology of opioid and nonopioid analgesics with the emphasis on the practical application of these principles to everyday clinical situations. Successful completion of this course will give the viewer the background to assess new analgesics for possible inclusion into their drug armamentarium. Powerpoint Presentation revised 8/2006. Speaker: John Smith, Ph.D. Sedation in the Dental Office & Medical Emergencies - 2007 - DVD This program will reveiw aspects related to "Increasing Patient Comfort" as well as a breif review of Medical Emergencies. This presentation is intended as a thorough overview of the principles and practice of sedation in the general practice dental setting. Criteria covered for renewal of Class I, Class II and 7 hours toward a Class III sedation permits. • 2 hours medical emergencies • 2 hours pharmacology of drugs used in sedation • 2 hours patient monitoring • 1 hour physical evaluation Taped 3/9/07 Speaker: Kenneth Reed, DMD There is Pharmacology in the Air: Nitrous Oxide Use in Dentistry - 2006 DVD This course is targeted for dentists and dental hygienists who are licensed to administer N 2 O. Dr. Smith will review important pharmacological and therapeutic aspects of nitrous oxide use in the dental office. He will also offer insights into federal and state regulations that apply to the dental use of nitrous oxide as well as the question of health effects associated with long term exposure to trace concentrations of nitrous oxide in office air.
