RESEARCH INTERESTS

Fundamental knowledge about the physical and chemical properties of a material is necessary in order to understand the interaction of the material with cells and tissues in a living system.  We are using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR, ICP, and DSC, as well as other techniques to characterize implant materials prior to investigating the material-cellular interactions in-vitro, using osteoblast-rich primary cell cultures.

We are also assessing the ability of various classes of bioactive materials to serve as tissue engineering scaffolds and drug delivery devices, by seeding them with cells and growing them in vitro and in-vivo.  We are thus creating three-dimensional constructs which may be used to provide rapid healing in surgically created bone defects, as well as off-the-shelf filler materials which greatly reduce the time necessary for full-strength restoration of bone function.
