The OHSU Professional Board has approved programs to include tobacco dependence treatment as part of patient care at OHSU hospital and ambulatory practices. Here is how they work:
In the Hospital:
- Nursing staff will assess tobacco use when patients are admitted and review "Smoking Cessation Guide for Hospital Patients"
(http://ozone.ohsu.edu/healthsystem/dept/Pted/ptedhandouts/) - Physicians can order nicotine replacement and a consult with the Tobacco Treatment NP when patients are admitted on order set PO-7290, “Tobacco Dependence Inpatient Orders”

In ambulatory practices:
- Medical assistants ask patients if they use tobacco and enter into Epicare.
- Clinicians can provide treatment by prescribing medications and arranging for follow up OR
- Clinicians can REFER for treatment to OHSU outpatient pharmacies
