A Phase II Multicenter Randomized Trial Evaluating 3-Year Disease-Free Survival in Patients with Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer Treated with Chemoradiation Plus Induction or Consolidation Chemotherapy, and Total Mesorectal Excision or Non-Operative Management

Study Purpose

To find out what effects, good and/or bad, having chemotherapy before surgery has on rectal cancer. We believe that it will be better for you to have chemotherapy before surgery, but we are not sure if it is better to give the chemotherapy before or after the chemoradiation.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Men and women age 18 or older
2. Confirmed diagnosis of rectal cancer
3. No prior pelvic radiation or prior chemotherapy or surgery for rectal cancer
