Prenatal growth programs oral contraceptive metabolism and effectiveness

Study Purpose

The purpose of this study is to see if weight and body composition can affect how well oral birth control can work in women.

Medical Condition(s)

Obesity and contraception failure.

Eligibility Criteria

Must be:
Female
aged 18 to 35,
non-smoker,
no high blood pressure,
stable weight
able to provide a copy of your birth certificate to demonstrate birth weight
looking to begin an oral birth control regimen
no use of hormonal contraception (patch or ring included) for at least 8 weeks prior to study.

Women will be recruited to one of four groups:

a) Low birth-weight, obese
b) Low birth-weight, normal BMI
c) Normal birth-weight, obese
d) Normal birth-weight, normal BMI

Age Range

18 - 35

Healthy Volunteers Needed

Duration of Participation

One month.

Compensation

Subjects will receive up to $550 for their participation. Payment will be received based on visits completed as follows:

• Visit 2
• Day -2: $100
• Day -1: $100
• Visit 3
•Day 21: $100
•Day 22: $50
• Visit 4 (Day 23): $50
• Visit 5 (Day 24): $50
• Visit 6 (Day 25): $100

If subjects do not complete the entire study, they will be paid for the visits completed. Subjects will not receive any compensation for completing visit 1.
