Special Education Fellowship

LEND Special Education Trainee Opportunities

General Description:

The special education program is designed to serve as a unique resource for special educators interested in training in an interdisciplinary setting. The program offers clinical, research and leadership training and education for special educators wishing to increase their understanding of interdisciplinary clinical assessment and care of children and youth with special health care and educational needs.

Trainees can also expect to increase their understanding of specific neurodevelopmental disabilities and educational outcomes of children with special learning and health care needs. Opportunities for training fall into two categories.

Full time trainee (16 hours per week for 9 or 12 months) with modest stipend:

The Special Education full time trainee position provides leadership training for post-masters or Ph.D. individuals in the prevention, detection and management of neurodevelopmental disabilities (autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, intellectual disability, learning disability, cerebral palsy, etc.) and chronic health care conditions in an interdisciplinary setting.

Trainees participate in LEND Interdisciplinary Seminars for two hours on Thursday afternoons, September through May. Seminar content includes neurodevelopmental disabilities, family-centered care, research, policy and advocacy. Trainees also spend one day of the week rotating through various Child Development and Rehabilitation Center clinics, and provide academic achievement testing for children and youth being evaluated by clinic teams.

Experience with the Oregon Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs and community-based multi-disciplinary assessment teams is also available. Experience providing educational and adolescent transition care for children and youth cared for by the Hemophilia Center at OHSU is also available for interested trainees.

Applicants should submit:

  1.  a letter of intent including background and areas of interest
  2.  a resume including at least three references qualified to comment on the status of the applicant

Short time trainee (8 to 10 hours per week for approx. 3 months):

The Special Education short time trainee position provides an opportunity to develop an awareness of the role and function of other disciplines and their role in the interdisciplinary assessment process. Trainees can expect to gain clinical experience administering academic achievement, and phonological processing testing. This experience may be especially useful for students in special education training programs who want to apply information learned in assessment classes.
