Cognition & Aging Laboratory

About Our Lab
Sex hormones are now media celebrities in the battle against aging, but the science of how they work is far from complete. In the Cognition & Aging Laboratory, we study the neurological changes that occur with aging, with a focus on how hormones impact the aging brain. Our current studies investigate the role of hormones in emotional memory with aging, the mechanisms for sex steroid effects in the brain, and the effects of androgen loss on the aging male brain. Studies utilize the resources of OHSU's General Clinical Research Center, as well as MRI technology at the new Advanced Imaging Research Center.
Research assistant Phyllis Carello (standing) helps a research participant complete the pursuit rotor task as part of a thyroid and cognition study.
Research Opportunities
The lab offers graduate and post-doctoral training opportunities to qualified candidates through the Department of Behavioral Neuroscience. Our alumni contribute actively in neuroscience programs around the country.
Women on estrogen therapy show less brain activity in the frontal cortex during mental rotation tasks than do women without hormone replacement.
Study Volunteers
The lab frequently seeks healthy community volunteers to participate in cognitive studies. Contact the lab for current opportunities or visit OHSU's research participation page.

Our new imaging center is here!
Across the street from our home in the Hatfield Research Center, the new Biomedical Research Building houses the Advanced Imaging Research Center's new 3T, 7T as well as a 12T magnet to be used for small-animal and tissue imaging.
