Superfund Basic Research Program

The SBRC is funded by a grant (5 P42 ES010338) from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) through its Superfund Basic Research Program.

Welcome! The Superfund Basic Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University is a multidisciplinary research program that seeks to enhance our ability to protect public health, prevent disease, and reduce exposure in populations at risk for hazardous chemical exposure at Superfund sites.

The focus of our Center’s research is on hazardous Superfund chemicals that exert toxic effects on the mammalian brain and other parts of the developing and adult nervous system. We are particularly interested in organochlorine and benzene-related solvents, chemicals which are known to contaminate many Superfund sites.

Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to:

  • Devise sensitive methods to detect toxic chemicals in animals, people, and the environment
  • Understand the potential adverse effects of these chemicals on the developing and mature nervous system, and
  • Develop methods of bioremediation of hazardous chemicals at Superfund sites

SBRC receives supplemental grant in collaboration with CROET's Toxicogenomics Research Center to form research partnership in Bangkok, Thailand.

Our Center encompasses scientists at three research institutes: the Center for Research on Occupational and Environmental Toxicology (CROET) at Oregon Health & Science University, Oregon State University, and Battelle, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

We hope this website serves as a valuable source of information about our local and regional environment.
