Facilities
The radiology residency program is based
at the OHSU Hospital. The radiology resident spends approximately
12 months during the training program at the Portland Veterans Administration
Medical Center. These two facilities are on adjoining campuses and connected
by a 660 foot climate controlled bridge traversing a 150 foot deep wooded
ravine separating the two hospitals. This enables full integration
of the two departments and faculty. Residents at both facilities
attend the two daily resident teaching conferences held at OHSU Hospital.
OHSU
Hopital and Clinics
The OHSU Hospital is located on the campus
of the Oregon Health & Science University on Marquam Hill, five minutes
from the city center and overlooking the city of Portland and the Willamette
River. The 523 bed hospital has over 24,000 admissions per year and houses the
inpatient Diagnostic Radiology Department including the Interventional
Radiology section. A complete renovation of these areas was completed in
1997. With this renovation, all inpatient facilities and the Emergency
Department are housed in the OHSU Hospital. Attached to OHSU Hospital is
the recently completed Physician's Pavilion where outpatient radiology
services are provided including fluoroscopy, ultrasound and mammography.
The OHSU Radiology facilities contain state-of-the-art
equipment with three multi-detector CT scanners, two 1.5 and two 3 Tesla MRI units,
five new fluoroscopic rooms, both inpatient and outpatient ultrasound suites
and a dedicated mammography suite. In nuclear medicine, five cameras
are installed, including three tomographic systems. The interventional
section has three recently installed interventional/angiography rooms and
in 1996 opened a 13 bed Interventional Recovery Unit for the same-day care
of angio/interventional patients.
OHSU provides care to patients who live in
Oregon, southern Washington, Idaho, and Alaska, but most are from the
greater Portland area. In addition, we provide the radiology services for
adjacent hospitals in the OHSU complex, including the Doernbecher Hospital
for Children and the Shriner's Hospital for Children. We perform
approximately 181,000 diagnostic examinations per year including 3,500
special procedures. OHSU is a public corporation with funding primarily
from practice funds and approximately 17% obtained from the State of Oregon
with additional funding from Federal and private sources. OHSU ranks in the
top 3% in the nation for NIH research funding.

Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center Hospital
During the four year program, residents
are assigned for a total of 12 months to the Portland Veterans Affairs
Medical Center Hospital. The PVAMC is one of the newest hospitals in Portland,
having 314 beds and a close clinical relationship with OHSU. Its Radiology
Department performs 71,000 examinations per year. Facilities include two
CT scanners (two helicals, one of which is a multi-detector), three
fluoroscopy rooms, 1 MRI scanner, multiplanar tomography, three ultrasound
suites and general radiographic rooms. Resident rotations at the PVAMC
include GI/GU radiology, CT, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and interventional
radiology including neuroangiography. All of the radiologists at the PVAMC
are members of the OHSU faculty and most members of the OHSU full time
faculty rotate to the PVAMC. This fully integrated program is important
to our residency training program because it contributes a significant
additional volume of cases and complements the patient mix found at the
OHSU Hospital. Resident participation on rotations at the PVAMC is very similar
to that at the OHSU Hospital. All resident work is supervised and reviewed by the
faculty.

Dotter Interventional Institute
The Dotter Interventional Institute was established
in April 1990 as an independent, free-standing division of OHSU. The Insitute was
charged with developing a multidisciplinary program in interventional therapy
with emphasis on interventional education, research, and patient care. The
Institute is fully integrated with the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at OHSU
with Frederick S. Keller, M.D. serving as both Director of the Interventional
Institute and Chairman of the Department of Radiology. The interventional radiologists
perform the clinical work at both the OHSU Hospital and the PVAMC. Diagnostic
radiology residents perform a total of four rotations in angio/interventional
radiology with experience at both locations with supervision by faculty for all cases.
Research activities are centered at the Dotter Research Laboratory. This 10,000
square foot research facility includes two angiographic laboratories for
imaging, wet labs, a large workshop for creating and manufacturing interventional
devices, the Charles Dotter Museum, a learning laboratory with interactive laser
disc machines and CD-ROMS, and the interventional/angiographic film library.
Support for research activities include full time researchers, a research engineer,
visiting researchers from the United States as well as Asia and Europe, and full
time photography support.

Location
OHSU is located on a 116 acre wooded hillside
campus in Portland's West Hills overlooking downtown Portland and the Willamette
River. Portland, with a population of 1.5 million, is Oregon's largest city and
consistently ranked as one of the most livable cities in the country. The city has
7,500 acres of land in an extensive park system with hiking trails, zoo, arboretum,
rose and Japanese and Chinese gardens. Downtown Portland is exceptionally livable
and active and is pedestrian friendly both day and night. Cultural opportunities
include a center for the performing arts with a symphony orchestra, opera, ballet
and theater. Portland supports a NBA basketball team, the Trailblazers, as well as AAA baseball
and ice hockey teams.
Numerous opportunities for outdoor activities are available. The local rivers
and lakes provide swimming, sailing and world class wind surfing. The mountains on
both sides of the Willamette valley are ideal for hiking, fishing and camping and
excellent downhill and cross-country skiing. Ocean beaches are a 90 minute drive
to the west. The annual rainfall in Portland is 42 inches. The Portland temperature
averages 67 degrees in the summer and 42 degrees in the winter.
