Preventive
Medicine Residency Program
The Oregon Health & Science University Preventive
Medicine Residency Program is a fully accredited training program
for physicians in accordance with the Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The Preventive Medicine Residency
offers either a one- or two-year training program. Residents who
enter the training program with an MPH (Master of Public Health)
or equivalent degree are assigned to a one-year residency at a Practicum
site (PGY-3). Residents who enter the program without an MPH degree
begin a two-year residency at the academic year (PGY-2) level.
All residents must have completed a PGY-1 residency year at an ACGME-approved
institution prior to entering this program. There is a PGY-1 Transitional
Year at Legacy
Health Systems in Portland, Oregon. During their final year
of medical school, interested applicants should apply concurrently
to Legacy AND to OHSU Preventive Medicine Residency program; note
that these applications are NOT submitted through the national matching
program. Residents who complete the program are eligible to be Board-certified
in General Preventive Medicine.
The MPH and Practicum educational experiences at Oregon
Health & Science University are combined in the two-year program.
Residents have a choice to enter one of two MPH tracks: the OHSU
Epidemiology
and Biostatistics track or the Portland State University (PSU)
Health
Management and Policy track. The OHSU track offers a curriculum
rich in biostatistics and epidemiology with some exposure to health
services organization and administration, environmental health,
occupational medicine, and social and behavioral influences on health.
The Health Management and Policy track offers a curriculum in health
systems organization, environmental health, principles of health
behavior, health care economics, strategic management, organizational
theory and behavior, health policy, epidemiology, biostatistics,
and values and ethics in health services.
We also offer a combined Family
Practice/Preventive Medicine residency program in cooperation
with the Department of Family Medicine. Information about residency education at OHSU
is available through the School of Medicine website. Information
about careers in preventive medicine is available through the American Board of Preventive
Medicine website.
The overall goal of the training program for
each resident is board certification by the American Board of Preventive
Medicine in the specialty of General Preventive Medicine and Public
Health. A population-based medicine perspective is the framework
of instruction employed to teach residents the skills necessary
to become leaders, researchers, public health officials, quality
assurance analysts, medical administrators, and policy makers. Our
training program emphasizes applying evidence-based scientific knowledge
and technical skills to disease prevention, health maintenance,
and wellness promotion within communities and populations. Training
goals include: proficiency in the skills of epidemiology, biostatistics,
organizational administration, and health education; knowledge of
environmental issues; and application of appropriate screening procedures.
Residents can pursue specific areas of interest as well as gain
exposure to public health and community medicine in a variety of
ways at OHSU and in the larger Portland community. The residency
experience is structured around a weekly didactic series that benefits
from prominent guest speakers, resident-led discussions, journal
club meetings, MMWR reviews, and discussion of topics geared to
assist residents with board preparation.
