The Division of Epidemiology

The Division of Epidemiology supports the epidemiology curriculum in the School of Medicine and in the tri-campus Oregon MPH program. The Division’s education program embraces a broad scope of clinical and public health epidemiology topics aimed at masters, pre-doctoral, and postdoctoral trainees and includes non-degree training programs aimed at Native Americans.

Relationships through volunteer and professional organizations increase the opportunity to forge alliances for prevention and intervention projects in the future. Its research portfolio includes studies of the epidemiology of cancer (breast, colorectal, prostate, skin, ovarian), a patient navigator program for American Indians, diet and nutrition, and aging.

The Division’s goals are:

  • Educate
  • Investigate Health related issues and design Research programs
  • Promote Health issues and Awareness
  • Develop an interdisciplinary research program that integrates epidemiologic and biologic methods and health issues

About Us

The Division of Epidemiology is building a strong research infrastructure. The Department has recently received designation as a Prevention Research Center. The Center will help foster research relationships with special populations, including Native Americans, those with disabilities, the Veterans Administration population, and the Medicaid population. In addition, based on the interdepartmental relationships of division members, clinical research opportunities for epidemiology are available in a variety of fields including molecular epidemiology, the epidemiology of aging, epidemiology of the built environment, and community based research. The Division catalyzes linkages with Portland State University and Oregon State University by serving on thesis committees. Collaborations with epidemiology researchers in the Center for Health Research and Oregon Research Institute further strengthen the Division and Department. Finally, the Division is building public health capacity through efforts to provide training for public health workers in Oregon and in the Oregon Health Department.
