Psychiatry Fellowships

GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY FELLOWSHIP
The geriatric psychiatry residency is a fully ACGME accredited one-year fellowship. Graduates of this program are qualified to be examined by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) for added-qualification in Geriatric Psychiatry. The program, under the direction of Linda Ganzini MD MPH began training fellows in 1991. Geriatric training facilities include acute and chronic inpatient units, several outpatient settings, the 80-bed teaching Nursing Home Care Unit, a geriatric substance dependence treatment program and geriatric consultation. Outstanding research programs in the dementias, mood disorders, schizophrenia, psychiatric epidemiology, ethics, end-of-life care, and substance abuse are available to provide training in research. Applicants to the general residency in adult psychiatry who are interested in geriatrics are encouraged to identify this interest so that interviews with geriatric fellowship faculty can be arranged. CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY FELLOWSHIP
THE OHSU RESIDENCY
in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is an ACGME fully accredited
two-year fellowship in child psychiatry. Graduates of this program
are qualified to be examined by the American Board of Psychiatry
and Neurology (ABPN) for subspecialty certification in child psychiatry.
Residents receive close supervision in a broad range of clinical
experiences with varied populations. These include rotations with
severely disturbed children and adolescents at Providence Medical
Center and the Christie School: with physically and psychophysiologically
ill children on the Pediatric Consultation/Liaison Service at Doernbecher Children's Hospital; with developmentally disabled
children at the CDRC and Center for Continuous Improvement
with seriously emotionally disturbed preschool-aged children at
the Lifeworks NW Children's Psychiatric Day Treatment Center; and with juvenile
offenders at the MacLaren Correctional Facility. Continuous outpatient
experience with a diverse patient population presenting the full
array of childhood psychopathology is provided in the OHSU Child
and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic located in Doernbecher
Children's Hospital. Residents also participate in community consultation
rotations in both years. These clinical experiences are accompanied
by didactics, interviewing and psychotherapy instruction. Trainees
are also offered opportunities to participate in research. Applicants
are encouraged to identify this interest so that interviews with
child psychiatry faculty can be arranged.

ADDICTION
FELLOWSHIP
THE DEPARTMENT
OF PSYCHIATRY in association with Hazelden-Springbrook
offers fully accredited fellowship position in Addiction Psychiatry.
This one year program offers training at Hazelden-Springbrook,
a residential and outpatient addictions program geared towards
intensive treatment of professionals, OHSU, the Portland VAMC,
and other community sites. The focus is on clinical skills development
in chemical dependency diagnosis and treatment. Trainees are directly
supervised by experienced staff at the treatment sites and OHSU
faculty, all of whom are certified in Addiction Medicine (either
through the American Society of Addiction Medicine or theAmerican
Board of Psychiatry and Neurology). Clinical experience is supplemented
with didactic and interactive teaching, and takes advantage of
the wide range of expertise in other disciplines in the School
of Medicine.There are opportunities for research in areas related
to substance abuse spanning the basic and clinical sciences. Applicants
must be board eligible or certified in Psychiatry. There may be
additional positions for non-psychiatrists seeking to prepare
for a career in Addiction Medicine through the American Society
of Addiction Medicine. Potential applicants for these positions

PVAMC
MOOD DISORDERS FELLOWSHIP
THE
MOOD DISORDERS RESEARCH & Treatment Center of the Portland
VA Medical Center is recruiting a full-time fellow. The fellowship
appointment will last up to two years with a salary of $45,000
- $50, 000 per year depending upon experience. The individual
will have graduated from or be imminently graduating from a psychiatry
residency program and have an interest in mood disorders research.
Preference will be given to individuals with prior psychiatric
research experience. This fellow will function as a research investigator
for clinical drug trials and as a clinician/ researcher in the
Systematic Treatment
Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD). Other
activities include data analysis and authorship and/or coauthorship
of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals. Didactic teaching includes
weekly clinical case conferences, a monthly journal club, and
a monthly mood disorders forum. Direct supervision on psychopharmacology
will be provided by experienced psychopharmacology researchers.
There will be up to 50% protected research time. This position
will report directly to the Chief of Psychiatry/ Clinical Director
of Mental Health. There will be an expectation that this person

FORENSICS
FELLOWSHIP
THE
FORENSICS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM features clinical rotations at
Oregon State Hospital, Oregon State Department of Corrections, Multnomah
County Corrections Health Division, the OHSU Intercultural Outpatient
Program, Willamette University College of Law Legal Clinic, the
Sexual Abuse Outpatient Clinic, and the Portland VAMC Disability
Evaluation Program. Fellows will have opportunities for research
at the Oregon Department of Corrections, the Multnomah County Jail,
and the Oregon State Hospital Forensic Inpatient/Outpatient setting.
The primary faculty
includes 10 board certified psychiatrists who also hold ABPN certification
in Forensic Psychiatry, three lawyers who have extensive experience
with mental health law, and two psychologists who have been trained
in Forensic Psychology. The fellows didactic seminar series will
include training in both criminal and civil forensic psychiatry
as well as seminars devoted to introductory law, landmark cases
in mental health law, and special issues in forensic psychiatry.
For didactic purposes, collaboration with graduate psychology programs
at George Fox University in McMinnville, Oregon and Pacific University
School of Professional Psychology in Forest Grove, Oregon is planned.
The seminar series will also be open to Willamette University and
Lewis & Clark College Law School students.
Fellows will be participants
in the Department's resident teaching program. Research opportunities
are available and encouraged either through participation in ongoing
Department work or development of an independent project with
faculty supervision. The fellowship is fully accredited by ACGME.

PSYCHOSOMATIC MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP
THE OHSU PSYCHOSOMATIC MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM is one-year in duration starting at the PGY-5 level. The program has received full accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Most members of the combined OHSU/Portland VA Medical Center Psychosomatic Medicine faculty have American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology subspecialty certification in Psychosomatic Medicine or dual Medicine-Psychiatry Board Certification. Several faculty members are core investigators of the VA Health Services Research & Development Center for the Study of Chronic Comorbid Mental and Physical Disorders. We provide a balanced experience in psychosomatic medicine, with opportunities to develop clinical, teaching and research skills. Clinical skills are taught in ambulatory and acute care settings and in consultation to medical colleagues and through continuous care of outpatients at the Portland VA and OHSU. Rotations in several ambulatory primary care clinics are included. A research experience is required for one-half day per week for six months, with the option of increasing research time to one-half day per week for 12 months. There are active research programs in the following areas: health services (in particular, detection and treatment of mental disorders in primary care, chronic pain, and epidemiology of comorbid disorders) dementias, mood disorders, Hepatitis C, schizophrenia, ethics, substance use disorders, Parkinsons Disease, and end-of-life care. Finally, there are opportunities to teach OHSU Medicine residents and Medical Students in most of the rotations. SLEEP MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP
The Sleep Medicine Fellowship training program is a thoroughly multidisciplinary program involving faculty from neurology, otorhinolaryngology, child and adult psychiatry, child and adult pulmonary medicine, and dental sleep medicine. While the fellowship is administered through the OHSU Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine, fellow applicants come to us from a variety of disciplines. Fellows participate in the very active clinical programs and sleep laboratories of both the Oregon Health & Science University and the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center. Participation in research is expected.
