Application Information

The Department of Psychiatry welcomes you to apply for an intern position through the AAMC Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Only completed applications submitted through ERAS will be reviewed, and because there are a limited number of interview days, please submit your application by November 1, 2006. It is not necessary to provide a return postcard or call to check the status of your application; the ERAS system will notify you as we download your information into our files. The residency program participates in the NRMP (National Residency Matching Program) and ERAS, applicant participation in these programs is required. No paper applications will be accepted.

If you wish to apply to our program at the PGY-1 level, a completed ERAS application consists of the following seven elements:

  1. Completed application
  2. Personal photograph (required if invited for an interview)
  3. Curriculum vitae
  4. Personal statement
  5. Dean's letter
  6. Two letters of recommendation (three are preferred)
  7. Official USMLE score for Part I or COMLEX score for Part I

Prior to beginning residency, July 1, all incoming interns must have successfully passed USMLE Steps 1, 2 (including Clinical Skills Exam).

International medical graduates are required to submit the above items
in addition to:
  • ECFMG certificate
  • Documentation of U.S. clinical experience
  • Personal statement regarding background and interest in psychiatry
  • Proof of possession of a J-1 visa
There is no minimum score requirement.
There is no medical school graduation date requirement.

The department does not sponsor H-1 visas. International medical graduates should contact the ECFMG, (215)386-5900, to obtain more information about the ERAS application process.

If you are selected for an interview, an invitation will be extended via email. The interview is an essential part of the application process, and involves one full day in Portland. Interviews start promptly at 9:00 a.m. and include a lunch with some of our residents. We interview on Wednesdays and Fridays, no holidays or weekends, November through the first week in February, excluding the last week in December and the first Friday in January.

We appreciate your interest in our psychiatry program and welcome your application.
