SECTION 1. COMPONENTS
OF THE FELLOWSHIP
- PSYCHIATRY CORE
Nursing Skilled
Care Unit (NSCU) (Davis)
The Fellow works with an interdisciplinary team evaluating and
treating patients with psychiatric disorders in an 80-bed VA nursing
home.
VA Geriatric
Psychiatry Clinic (Ganzini, Misra, Davis)
The Fellow evaluates and treats patients on a sustained basis
in continuous clinic experience. Patients are selected to represent
various common disorders seen in general practice:
- Organic
Mental Disorders
- Dementias
with prominent treatable psychiatric symptoms
- Affective
Disorders
- Anxiety
Disorders
- Schizophrenia
OHSU Geriatric
Psychiatry Clinic (Smith)
The Fellow evaluates and treats cases selected to complement those
seen at the VA Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic, for example, women.
Dr. Smith attends each clinic to supervise.
Geriatric
Substance Abuse (Fireman)
The Fellow, in the context of interdisciplinary team, evaluates
and treats elderly persons with alcohol and other substance abuse
problems entered in a day treatment or group outpatient program.
Portland VAMC
Consult Liaison (Ganzini, Misra)
The Fellow works with PGY-2 psychiatry residents to evaluate patients
on medical and surgical services.
OHSU ECT Service
(Smith)
Elective experience in ECT treatment at OHSU leading to added
ECT certification.
- COMMUNITY PSYCHIATRY
CORE
Aging Services
(Ganzini)
The Fellow works with Area Agency on Aging and Aging Protective
Services evaluating at-risk clients in the community.
- GERIATRIC MEDICINE
CORE
Geriatric
Medicine Assessment Clinic (Joseph)
In addition to basic geriatric medicine, the Fellow learns a multidisciplinary
approaches to evaluation of functional status, depression, and
behavioral problems associated with dementias, as well as treatment
of other common functional deficits in the elderly such as multiple
sensory deficits, and deficits in activities of daily living.
- NEUROLOGY/NEUROPSYCHIATRY
CORE
VA Dementia
Program and Clinic (Kaye, Douglas, Quinn)
The Fellow evaluates new patients and sees follow-ups in this
multidisciplinary program. Every clinic is supervised by faculty.
- RESEARCH CORE
Research Project
(Ganzini)
The Fellow may chose and conduct a project in one of the following
areas for which qualified faculty and facilities are available:
- Dementias
and Normative Brain Aging (Kaye)
- Schizophrenia,
Allied Psychoses, and Neuroleptic-Induced Movement Disorders
and Other Adverse Effects (Hoffman, Casey)

OHSU faculty have established consultation venues in several nursing
homes in northwest Oregon, including the Robison Jewish Home in
Portland and the Benedictine Nursing Center in Mt. Angel, Oregon.
