Resident Electives

PGY-4 RESIDENTS spend half-time in elective experiences. Residents design these elective experiences with faculty guidance and may pursue administrative, clinical, teaching or research experiences. A very broad range of experiences is sought by residents. Supervision of these experiences is carefully designed to provide the most educational experience possible. Recent elective experiences undertaken by the residents include: psychotherapy at the OHSU Student Health Service; treatment of hispanic migrant workers at a community clinic in the metropolitan area; treatment of substance abuse in a private practice setting at the Providence Hospital residential and outpatient treatment program; provision of psychiatric consultation to HIV/AIDS clinics; administrative elective at Tillamook County assisting in creation of a position for a full-time psychiatrist; transition to private practice focusing on familiarization with the setting; establishing contacts with community resources; learning the practical aspects of setting up a practice in Vancouver, WA.; psychiatric consultation to the Umatilla Indian Reservation; psychiatric consultation to the Warm Springs Indian Reservation; research in melatonin administration for treatment of chronobiological disorders; research on the course of neuroleptic-induced akathisia; and research on the prevention of MPTP-induced parkinsonism through pretreatment with MAOI in Cebus monkeys.
