Didactics, Seminars
and Resident Meetings
EACH
CLINICAL EXPERIENCE during the Residency
Training Program has its own series of didactics and seminars.
For example, while rotating on the inpatient services during the
first two years, residents are assigned readings to discuss with
their supervisors and attend a full range of case conferences,
family conferences and group therapy. Similarly, emergency, consultation/liaison,
child and adolescent psychiatry, behavioral medicine, alcohol
and drug, community psychiatry and outpatient rotations all have
formal seminars and case conferences associated with them that
residents attend while on those rotations.
In addition
to the educational programs associated with each clinical rotation,
there are weekly CORE Seminars. PGY-1 residents attend
the CORE 1 seminar, as well as didactics in neurology and medicine.
PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents attend the CORE II/III seminar. The
core seminar cycles every two years; one year, an extensive seminar
on neuroscience and biological psychiatry is taught, followed
by a seminar on child and adult development, while seminars on
transcultural psychiatry, alcohol and drug, forensics, geriatrics
and elective topics are given the next year. PGY-2 residents also
attend CORE IIB which is a year-long introduction to individual,
family and group therapies. PGY-3 residents also attend CORE IIIB,
which is a year-long seminar on advanced individual, family and
group therapies. PGY-4 residents attend CORE IV, covering preparation,
transition to practice and CME. transition to practice and CME.
Grand
Rounds is a presentation, meeting three times monthly,
covering issues in all areas of psychiatry. Most presentations
are lectures, but variations of the format, including case presentations,
are frequent. Visiting guests from around the country and the
world frequently present at grand rounds.
The chief
residents convene a residents' meeting once a week. This
provides an opportunity for all residents to come together to
interact with one another and to discuss issues of importance
in the residency, particiapate in case conferences and attend
special lectures.
A Resident
Support Group meets weekly under the supervision of a clinical
faculty member to provide residents with a forum to share their
feelings about training with their colleagues. This is an entirely
elective experience for interested residents.
Residents
attend a yearly fall retreat that is held at a lodge or
conference center in Oregon's natural woodland areas or picturesque
ocean beaches. The retreat is two full days and includes personal
growth workshops and discussion groups to generate new ideas,
as well as offering respite and relaxation. The main thrust is
to build a more cohesive group for mutual support and fellowship.
Mid-year, one day is dedicated to program review. Residents
meet to discuss educational, clinical and administrative aspects
of the program. Feedback from this meeting is used to guide program
improvements.
