Mechanisms
AT THE BEGINNING
of each rotation during the Residency Training Program, faculty
supervisors discuss specific educational and service goals and
objectives with the resident. The faculty supervisors evaluate
the performance of the resident based on these specific goals
and objectives and the evaluation forms are designed accordingly.
Written evaluations of the residents are submitted at the end
of each rotation. Similarly, residents are provided with evaluation
forms concerning their rotations and supervisors and are asked
to submit them at the end of each rotation. Faculty and residents
are encouraged to discuss frequently their assessments of one
another on an informal basis and to discuss specifically their
written evaluations.
All residents are
seen frequently by the director of Residency Training for informal
consultation and feedback. At least three times a year, each resident
formally meets with the director or associate director of Residency
Training to verbally review his/her performance and progress through
the program.
In the fall of each
year all residents take the Psychiatric Resident In-Training Examination
developed by the American College of Psychiatrists. In the spring
of each year, all residents receive an oral examination in the
format of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The
goal of these examinations is to provide each resident with standardized
feedback on his/her progress and highlight areas which need to
be strengthened.
On a yearly basis,
the Residency Training Committee reviews the performance of each
resident and of each rotation in the Residency Training Program.
The assessments are based on the results of faculty and resident
evaluations. A record is kept of each of the evaluation meetings,
and residents and faculty are personally notified of any deficiencies
or problems that have been identified. Advancement of residents
to higher levels of training is made on the basis of their performance,
and they are expected to demonstrate satisfactory growth in skills
and knowledge, while exhibiting professional attitudes and conduct.
An individual resident's
evaluations are made available to him or her upon request to the
director of Residency Training or the chair of the Department
of Psychiatry. Specific grievance procedures are specified in
the resident contracts and due process is guaranteed.
