Public Psychiatry Research Opportunities

This is an overview of public and services related psychiatric research opportunities, developed by the Public Psychiatry Training Program and its Research Director, Bentson McFarland. It will be updated periodically. For further clarification and support in developing research proposals, please contact Dr. McFarland (mcfarlab@ohsu.edu).

National overview:

National Institutes of Health:

Translation / Human Genome / Roadmap / “Bench to bedside” (? To Board Room ?)
Community-based Participatory Research.
Focus on translation and genetics. Return on investment in the human genome.
Some money available for projects that involve the community.


National Institute of Mental Health multi-site trials and follow-ups:

Clinical antipsychotic trials of intervention effectiveness (CATIE)
Sequenced treatment alternatives to relieve depression (STAR-D)
Systematic treatment enhancement program for bipolar disorder (STEP-BD)
VA here is the site for a bi-polar study.
Big money in multi-site trials and genetics.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Fifth Edition:

Possible involvement in next edition of the DSM which is expected in 2010 or 2011. Positions available for persons of multi-cultural background and/or females.
Wes Sowers is the AACP contact. They may be able to nominate commitee members.
No payment for time on committee but travel expenses are compensated.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality – literature reviews / ? guidelines ?

Financing for literature reviews

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (early psychosis / obesity / vulnerable populations)

Focusing its remaining funds for psychiatric issues on early psychosis.
Focus switched to obesity.
Used to have large substance abuse now it is folded into vulnerable populations.
Grants are easier to submit, they are on-line. Submit 4-5 pages, one hears back in 1-2
months. Grants are typically $100,000.

Pharmaceutical industry: ? / reactions to CATIE and STAR-D

Pharmaceutical industry is still reacting to CATIE and STAR-D.
Pharmaceutical companies may be shrinking which may affect research.
Pharmaceutical industry anxious about Medicare part D

State level projects and activities

OHREC – Oregon Health Research and Evaluation Collaborative

Developing proposals to analyze the process and outcomes of the new reprioritization of the Oregon Health Plan
Several other services research projects, some of which have behavioral health components.

Safety Net research group

now forming
Kaiser and OHSU
Practice based research network and safety net clinic database development.

Problem gambling (John Marotta, Oregon Addiction and MH Division Problem Gambling Coordinator). Has access to small grant funds for clinical and outcomes studies.


University overview:

Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute (University and Kaiser research)
Formerly General Clinical Research Center – transformed to OCTRI.
Now connecting to health care systems (specifically Kaiser).
Start up projects usually about $50,000.
Interest in in-patient studies.

Mostly at the Veterans Hospital.
Most research on mice.

Pilot projects. There is money for research projects. Need more human involvement.

Veterans Hospital internationally known for its research on mice and alcohol.

Oregon / Hawaii node. OHSU is headquarters.
