Clinical and Research Interests:
Dr. Wilson is Professor of Psychiatry at OHSU and Director of Inpatient Psychiatric Services at OHSU’s University Hospital. Before coming to OHSU in 1989, he served on the faculties of the University of Pittsburgh and the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
Educational Background. Dr. Wilson received his undergraduate degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed residency training in psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. He has been Board Certified in Psychiatry since 1986. Before entering medical school he worked as the Assistant Director of the Memphis Children’s Theater and taught high school Chemistry at St. Mary’s School in Memphis, Tennessee.
Awards and Recognition. Dr. Wilson was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Brown University. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He twice received an “Exemplary Psychiatrist Award” from the National Association for Mental Illness (NAMI). He received the “Mental Health Award for Excellence” from the State of Oregon, the “Faculty Mentor Award” and “Residency Teaching Award” from OHSU, and the "Nancy C. A. Roeske, MD Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Student Education” from the American Psychiatric Association. He is listed in Who’s Who in America, Best Doctors in America, and The Guide to America’s Top Psychiatrists; he was named as one of Portland’s Top Doctors by Portland Magazine.
Research Background. Dr. Wilson has been the principal investigator on studies of medication treatment of schizophrenia sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health and by industry. He is the author of research papers published in leading scientific medical journals and has presented his findings at national scientific meetings.
Inpatient Services. Dr. Wilson oversees all psychiatric care on the University Hospital Psychiatric Care Unit, which cares for adults with a wide range of severe disorders. As an Attending Psychiatrist he also takes primary responsibility for some of the patients on the Unit.
Office Practice. As a member of the OHSU Medical Group, Dr. Wilson sees adults with a variety of problems in his private office. Treatment modalities include psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, tailored to the particular needs of the individual.
Teaching. Dr. Wilson is one of the core teaching faculty for medical students during their required psychiatric rotations and for psychiatric residents. Dr. Wilson frequently teaches outside of OHSU providing continuing education to psychiatrists and other health professionals. He writes a regular column regarding practical issues in psychopharmacology in the newsletter of the Oregon Psychiatric Association. He authored book chapters on psychopharmacology in textbooks used in graduate school courses in Social Work and Psychology.
Personal Life. He is married with two children. Interests include the performing arts, the environment, and social justice.
