Clinical and Academic Interests:
Lawrence Hipshman came to psychiatry with a broad background in medical science. He received his degree in medicine at Wayne State University and then
trained first as an intern in internal medicine at Wayne State and next as a resident in neurology at the University of Wisconsin before entering the residency training program
in psychiatry at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. Prior to joining the faculty at OHSU in 1997, Dr. Hipshman was a consultant to the Department of Mental Health in Alaska, and then a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe Medical School and a supervising psychiatrist at Harare Central Hospital in Zimbabwe. His areas of interest include public and international mental health care, substance use disorders, and forensic psychiatry.
As medical director of the OHSU Behavioral Health Clinic, he treats patients with substance abuse and gambling problems that are often comorbid with other mental health disorders. In his work through the Intercultural Psychiatric Program, he treats Vietnamese, Ethiopian and Lao refugee and immigrant patients, many of whom have complex and diverse cultural, social and legal problems in addition to mental health problems. Dr. Hipshman also participates in the residency training and medical education programs at OHSU as a teacher and supervisor, and is often an invited presenter in the community.
