Clinical and Research Interests:
Dr. Emens' clinical focus is upon the diagnosis, analysis and treatment of sleep disorders as part
of an interdisciplinary team in the Sleep Medicine Program.
He also provides supervision for psychiatry residents.
His primary role is as principle investigator in a five-year research study titled, "Genetics of Morning/Evening
Types in the Blind/Sighted" through the resources of the Sleep Disorders Laboratory.
The goal of this research is to utilize recent developments in the molecular biology of circadian rhythms
to better understand the physiologic and genetic basis of diurnal preference in sighted humans and 24-hour
sleep/wake schedule disorders in the blind. Dr. Emens' research sponsors are Alfred Lewy, MD, PhD,
Professor of Psychiatry, Director of Sleep Disorders Research, and Vice Chairman of the Department of
Psychiatry, and Susan Hayflick, MD, Associate Professor of Molecular/Medical Genetics, and Vice Chairman
of the Department of Molecular/Medical Genetics.
