Academic Interests:Dr. David Cutler came to OHSU in 1977 and has been director of the Public Psychiatry Training Program since 1985. His responsibilities include planning and supervising training for psychiatry residents in required community mental health center and state hospital rotations. He served as chair of the APA Gold Award committee in 2000 and chair of the Program Committee of the Oregon Psychiatric Association from 1992 to 2000, and has been the recipient of numerous awards for his contributions to psychiatric education and his advocacy for the mentally ill. He has been editor-in-chief of the Community Mental Health Journal since 1987 and has published many journal articles as well as four books. His most recent book, Ethics in Community Mental Health Care: Commonplace Concerns, co-edited with Patricia Backlar was published in 2002 by Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers. In 2002, the American Psychiatric Association awarded Dr. Cutler its Assembly Speaker's Award "in honor of heroes of Public and Community Psychiatry," and in 2004, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) awarded him its Exemplary Psychiatrist Award for "developing and directing an innovative training program which demonstrates consumer and family- centered best practices."
