Interests:
Dr. Boehnlein completed
his training in general psychiatry at OHSU in 1984, and was then
awarded a two-year fellowship as a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar at
the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs
Medical Center. In 1987, he joined the faculty of the OHSU Department
of Psychiatry and the staff of the Mental Health Clinic at the Portland
VA Medical Center. Dr. Boehnlein is particularly interested in the
fields of transcultural psychiatry and post traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD). Over the past 15 years he has treated Cambodian and Central
American refugees in OHSU's Intercultural Psychiatric Program and
veterans suffering from PTSD and chronic mental illness at the Portland
VA. Dr. Boehnlein and his colleagues have conducted numerous research
studies and published extensively on the long term effects of trauma.
He is board certified in both general and forensic psychiatry.
Dr. Boehnlein is Director
of Medical Student Education for the Department of Psychiatry and
Assistant Dean for Curriculum for the OHSU School of Medicine. He
is also Associate Director for Education for the Mental Illness Research, Education,
and Clinical Center (MIRECC) of the Veterans
Affairs Northwest Network and President of the
Society for the Study of Psychiatry and Culture,
an international association of psychiatric and social science researchers
and educators. He has been a consultant to the Salem Veterans Outreach
Center since 1991 and also consults to Mercy Corps International.
