Dr. Benjamin Schultze is an acute care nurse practitioner by training and has provided care within the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine at both the University of Minnesota and the University of California- San Francisco. While at the University of Minnesota he began to work with the lung transplant population which lead to his employment at UCSF. From there he was recruited to help develop the first ever advanced practice provider group at the University of Washington in Seattle within the division of surgery in the cardio-thoracic intensive care unit. Dr. Schultze worked there while he completed his PhD.

Following his PhD, Dr. Schultze began working at OHSU. His primary area of research focus is on muscle wasting and the effects it has on patient outcomes following a prolonged chronic illness such as cancer and advanced heart failure as well as following acute illness. Dr. Schultze became the director of the AGACNP program in 2018. In addition to his work at OHSU, Dr. Schultze continues to serve the United States as a Major in the United States Air Force. There, he provides aeromedical evacuation to wounded and sick American, coalition and civilian personnel around the world. His most recent deployment was to Bagram Afghanistan.
