To understand a patient’s perspective in living with chronic illness.
To provide students with a clinical model in which physicians assist patients and families adapt to chronic illness.

Demonstrate sensitivity when caring for a patient with a chronic illness.
Describe the significance of the following for patients with chronic illness:
A. Personal meaning of the illness
B. Factors in managing and monitoring health
C. Lifestyle consequences
D. Family impact
E. Informal support structures
Describe the features of different time phases of chronic illness (i.e., crisis, chronic, terminal, and transitions between these).

| Small Group Activities: |
- Discuss student reactions to the panelists’ stories and accounts of their chronic illnesses. What time phase do you think each panelist is currently in?
- Students should assume the part of a physician treating a patient with a chronic illness. Describe the ways you could assist patients and families successfully adapt to their chronic illness using the panelists, readings, or other patients you’ve encountered as the basis for discussion. What barriers are present? What solutions or resources can you envision?
