Session Goal: To present/review basic concepts and vocabulary of the musculoskeletal exam: range of motion, palpation, and inspection.

To model examination procedures (as presented on DVD) and provide feedback as students practice examinations of the shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand, back, knee, and ankle.

 
 
Student Objectives:
Define assessment grades 1 - 5 on the muscle strength scale.

Demonstrate an examination of any joint including:
Inspection
Palpation for joint or periarticular tenderness
Active ROM
Passive ROM
Special maneuvers
Demonstrate an examination of any joint including:
Inspection
Palpation for joint or periarticular tenderness
Active ROM
Passive ROM
Special maneuvers
Muscle strength testing


Describe normal ROM for the movements of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, and spine.

Describe and demonstrate a complete knee exam including:
Evaluation for joint effusion, swelling, or deformity
Palpation for tenderness
Range of motion (active and passive)
Muscle strength testing
Joint specific tests
Ligament stability
Meniscus tear

Describe and demonstrate complete shoulder exam including:
Inspection for joint effusion, swelling, or deformity
Palpation for tenderness
Range of motion (active and passive)
Muscle strength testing
Joint specific tests
Rotator cuff tendinitis (Neer’s and Hawkin’s Tests)
Biceps tendinitis

Describe the actions of the rotator cuff muscles


Describe a complete spine exam including:
Inspection for alignment
Palpation for tenderness
Range of motion (active)
Tests for nerve root compression


Demonstrate proficiency in Musculoskeletal Exam using DVD checklist.

 
Small Group Activities:
  1. Using DVD checklist, have students practice musculoskeletal exam in pairs.


  2. Each student should demonstrate the musculoskeletal exam, as demonstrated in the exam DVD, to their faculty group leader.


  3. In the last 15 minutes, students will break into 2 groups for a GOSCE-type exercise on the Musculoskeletal exam.
