Students should preview the Nose, Mouth and Throat lecture and the "Nose & Mouth," "Head" and "Nodes and Thyroid" exams on the physical exam DVD on PCM Online prior to today's session.

Session Goal: To introduce the elements of the Nose & Sinuses, Mouth & Throat and Head Exams.

 
 
Student Objectives:
HEAD
Demonstrate general examination of the head looking for abnormal facies, masses.

Describe surface anatomy of sinuses and check for tenderness.

NOSE
Demonstrate ability to use otoscope or nasal speculum to examine the normal anatomy of the nose, including the septum, middle and inferior turbinates, middle and inferior meatus, and the normal nasal mucous membranes.

ORAL CAVITY
Demonstrate ability to use tongue blades and digital palpation to evaluate the normal anatomical structures of the oral cavity including the teeth, alveolar ridge, floor of the mouth, tongue, buccal cavity, Stensen's and Wharton's ducts, retromolar trigone, and mucous membranes.

ORO-PHARNYX
Demonstrate ability to use tongue blades to examine the pharynx and to evaluate the tonsils, pharyngeal walls and base of the tongue with palpation and tongue blade.

Identify the anatomical landmarks of the pharynx.

NECK
Demonstrate ability to perform a thorough exam by inspection and palpation of the entire neck including the parotid and salivary glands, identifying the various triangles of the neck and the lymph node regions including the anterior cervical, posterior cervical, occipital submandibular, and supraclavicular nodes.

Demonstrate technique for palpation of the thyroid gland.

Describe the locations of the crycothyroid membrane, crycoid cartilage, thyroid cartilage, and hyoid bone.

Describe the characteristics of a pathological lymph node.

CRANIAL NERVES
Demonstrate the examination of V, VII, IX, X, XI, XII.

Identify the findings for abnormalities in V, VII, IX, X, XI, XII.

Demonstrate proficiency in Nose & Sinuses Exam using DVD checklist.

Demonstrate proficiency in Mouth & Throat Exam using DVD checklist.

Demonstrate proficiency in Head Exam using DVD checklist.

Demonstrate proficiency in Nodes & Thyroid Exam using DVD checklist.

 
Small Group Activities:
  1. Using the checklists, have students practice performing the Head, Nodes & Thyroid, and Nose & Mouth exams in pairs.


  2. Have students demonstrate the Head, Nodes & Thyroid, and Nose & Mouth exams to their PE Tutors.


  3. If time permits, have students practice and demonstrate the integrated HEENT exam.


  4. In the last 15 minutes, students will break into 2 groups for a GOSCE-type exercise on the Nose, Mouth, Head, Thoat, Thyroid, and Nodes exam.
