Session Goal: To introduce elements of the Eyes Exam.

To introduce elements of the Ears Exam.

 
 
Student Objectives:
Ears
Describe the normal landmarks of the auricle, external canal, and tympanic membrane using a hand-held otoscope.

Demonstrate techniques to maximize visibility and patient comfort on examination.

Demonstrate ability to check membrane mobility with insufflation and describe how to interpret it.

Demonstrate the Weber and Rinne tests and describe how to interpret their findings.

Describe the exam findings of conductive and neurosensory hearing loss.

Eyes
Demonstrate assessment of cranial nerves II, III, IV, and VI.

Identify the extraocular muscle and cranial nerve abnormalities for cranial nerve abnormalities of III, IV, and VI.

Demonstrate assessment of pupil reactivity including direct and consensual response and interpret the cranial nerve abnormalities that cause abnormal papillary responses.

Demonstrate the assessment of visual acuity and describe how to interpret a Snellen Chart.

Demonstrate the assessment of visual fields and describe the abnormalities of homonymous hemianopsias, binasalhemianopsia, bitemporalhemianopsia, and upper and lower homonymous quadrantopsias.

Execute a funduscopic examination, noting location of optic disc, optic nerve, macula, and retinal vessels.

Describe the anatomy of the retina.

Describe the normal cup:disc ratio.

Demonstrate proficiency in Eyes Exam using DVD checklist.

Demonstrate proficiency in Ears Exam using DVD checklist.

 
Small Group Activities:
  1. Using the checklist, have students practice Eye exam in pairs.


  2. Have students demonstrate the Eye exam to their PE Tutor.


  3. Using the checklist, have students practice Ear exam in pairs.


  4. Have students demonstrate the Ear exam to their PE Tutor.


  5. In the last 15 minutes, students will break into 2 groups for a GOSCE-type exercise on the Eye and Ear exam.

Students should preview the Nose, Mouth and Throat lecture and the "Nose & Mouth," "Head" and "Nodes and Thyroid" exams on the physical exam DVD on PCM Online prior to today's session.
