Assignment Due Today:

Students should come prepared to present a case from their preceptorship in under 3 minutes which includes identifying data, chief complaint, and history of present illness (HPI). Readings for this session will provide guidance.

Session Goal: To introduce the basic components of the oral case presentation.

To facilitate effective communication between students and their preceptors.

 
 
Student Objectives:
Describe the differences between the written and oral case presentation.

Describe how to adapt the case presentation to the context of that presentation.

Demonstrate an oral case presentation.

 
Small Group Activities:
  1. PE Tutors can begin this session by discussing readings and reviewing the differences between the written and oral case presentation.


  2. Discuss the various contexts in which a student or physician will deliver an oral case presentation. These setting may include a hospital admission, a hospital daily visit, a new clinic patient, a follow up clinic patient, or a request for consultation. Discuss how the context will influence the content of the presentation.


  3. Each student should deliver an oral case presentation of a patient they have seen in their preceptorship. Tutor and students should discuss each presentation for appropriate content, organization, and clarity and give formative feedback as necessary. Specific questions that may be asked include: Is every element in the correct place? Did the presentation answer all of my questions?


 
Assignment Due Oct 21:
Students should preview the Musculoskeletal lecture and the "Musculoskeletal" exam on the physical exam DVD on PCM Online prior to today's session.
