| Session Goal: |
To understand why the principles of truth telling and confidentiality are cornerstones to the physician-patient relationship.
To understand the ethical and legal exceptions to protecting patient privacy.
To understand the basics of HIPAA and how it affects the manner in which health information is shared.

| Student Objectives: |
Describe the legal concepts governing the physician-patient relationship, truth telling and the confidentiality of medical information.
Describe the ethical principles that guide truth telling and the confidentiality of medical information.
Describe harms to the patient and society for not telling the truth and for breaches in confidentiality.
Identify situations of appropriate and inappropriate information sharing per the OHSU and HIPAA policies.

| Small Group Activities: |
- Review the issues raised in the large group session on both truth telling and confidentiality. Students can then analyze cases 1-4. Try to allow 10-15 minutes for each case discussion.
