Students should preview the Abdominal Exam lecture and the "Abdomen" exam on the physical exam DVD on PCM Online prior to today's session.

| Session Goal: |
To introduce elements of the basic abdominal exam.
|

| Student Objectives: |
Demonstrate methods for draping patient and positioning patient for ease of examination.
Describe the four and nine part naming systems for the abdomen and what organs are in each area.
Identify inguinal and femoral lymph node regions.
Identify and describe inspection, auscultation, palpation, and percussion techniques for the abdominal exam.
Demonstrate techniques for abdominal palpation and percussion.
Describe the percussive findings of splenomegaly.
Demonstrate Murphy’s sign and describe what it means.
Describe the findings of shifting dullness and the fluid wave.
Describe the findings of peritonitis.
Demonstrate and describe the findings of appendicitis.
Identify surface anatomy of: anterior superior iliac spine, symphysis pubis, inguinal ligament including bony landmark of attachment.
Demonstrate proficiency in Abdomen Exam using DVD checklist.

| Small Group Activities: |
- Open session by again referring to the preceptorship and asking whether anyone has had an experience related to the abdominal exam.
- Review topographical areas of the abdomen and discuss topographical location of abdominal organs.
- Using the checklist, have students pair up to practice abdominal exam.
- Students should demonstrate abdominal exam to PE Tutor.
- In the last 15 minutes, students will break into 2 groups for a GOSCE-type exercise on the Abdominal exam.

Students should come prepared to present a case from their preceptorship in under 3 minutes which includes identifying data, chief complaint, and history of present illness (HPI). Readings for this session will provide guidance.
