| Session Goal: |
To introduce elements of the basic lung exam.
To practice the lung exam as demonstrated on DVD.
|

| Student Objectives: |
Demonstrate appropriate methods for gown and drape for the lung exam.
Describe normal and abnormal respiratory rates: apnea, tachypnea, bradypnea, hyperventilation and hypoventilation.
Identify and describe the use of the accessory muscles of respiration.
Describe where the lung lobes project on the chest.
Demonstrate lung percussion technique.
Describe the typical percussion notes and where they are normally found.
Demonstrate lung ausculation techniques.
Describe and distinguish between tubular and vesicular breath sounds and where they are normally heard.
Describe why you would hear tubular breath sounds in the peripheral chest.
Describe the adventitious breath sounds and what they signify.
Define lung consolidation.
Demonstrate the technique for tactile fremitus and describe what it means.
Describe consolidation and pleural effusions and what exam findings distinguish between them.
Demonstrate the technique for egophany and describe what it means.
Describe and demonstrate thoracic landmarks.
Demonstrate proficiency in Lungs and Thorax Exam using DVD checklist.

| Small Group Activities: |
- Review student experiences in their preceptorships with the lung exam.
- Using DVD checklist, have students practice lung exam in pairs.
- Have students demonstrate lung exam to PE Tutor.
- In the last 15 minutes, students will break into 2 groups for a GOSCE-type exercise on the Lung exam.
