Session Goal: To introduce the physician's role in health promotion and preventive medicine activities.

To recognize the role of behavior change as a cornerstone of health promotion.

To understand primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.

 
 
Student Objectives:
Define the concept of health promotion, including the principles of patient education and counseling.

Describe the role of the physician in health promotion activities.

Explain how behavior change functions in health promotion efforts.

Demonstrate screening strategies recommended for selected patients, using history, physical exam, and lab/diagnostic procedures.

Describe counseling pertinent to selected patients, including:

• Diet and Exercise
• Substance Abuse
• Sexual Practices
• Injury Prevention
• Other primary preventive measures, including screening examination, immunizations and chemoprophylaxis

Define primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.

 
Small Group Activities:
  1. Begin with reactions to presentation. Each student should then contribute what they found out about their preceptor's involvement — both in and outside of clinical practice — in health promotion or preventive medicine.


  2. Work through the three cases (note that these have been modified from the cases in your book), coming to agreement on answers to questions as a group before tutor gives author's recommendations.
