Residency Training Goals
- To provide a sound foundation in the principles and practice of diagnostic pathology and to teach the procedural and technical skills required by the modern pathology practitioner.
- To foster the physician role in the pathologist as colleague and consultant to the clinical services; to convey the importance of active participation in medical staff activities.
- To teach the technical and scientific expertise that the pathologist needs to provide medical/scientific direction and planning for laboratory operations and to introduce new applications. This includes experience in data management and quality assurance.
- To prepare trainees to assume the traditional role of a pathologist as a teacher in the continuing medical education activities of the medical staff.
- To teach the importance of continuing education - maintaining the intellectual curiosity necessary to keep abreast of changes in medical knowledge and to apply them in the diagnostic laboratory.
- To offer each trainee the opportunity to participate in basic scientific and/or clinical investigation and to provide the individual with an opportunity to elect a career in experimental pathology. All trainees, whether intending an academic career or a community practice, should become familiar with the principles of investigation, including study design, methods and data analysis, and should learn to critically read the medical literature.
- To prepare trainees to assume administrative and managerial roles in the hospital laboratory and to adapt to the regulatory and financial climate changes of pathology practice.
- To insure mastery of relevant skills in the six core competencies identified by ACGME: patient care, medical knowledge, practice based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems based practice.
