Hematopathology Fellowships

The OHSU Department of Pathology offers an ACGME-accredited one year fellowship program in hematopathology. There is an option for an additional second year if the fellow displays an interest in and aptitude for research. The first year provides comprehensive training in morphologic, immunologic, and molecular genetic areas of hematopathology, and allows up to 25% time for research and/or elective activities. Training is also provided in the routine and specialty hematopathology laboratories. The program is designed to provide individuals with a broad experience in the diagnosis of hematologic diseases and malignancies, and to provide a thorough exposure to ancillary diagnostic techniques.

The Hematopathology Section of the OHSU Department of Pathology is staffed by six hematopathologists. The fellows gain experience in the department's full-service flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and molecular diagnostics laboratories. In addition, hematologist faculty staffing the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Laboratories, which is referral laboratory The Hematopathology Service at OHSU works very closely with faculty and staff in the Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology Sections; all hematologic malignancies are referred to hematopathology staff for sign-out by the other anatomic pathology sections.

The fellowship is dedicated primarily to in-depth training in diagnostic hematopathology and laboratory hematology. Under hematopathology staff supervision, fellows rotate on all clinical hematopathology services. While on each service, fellows have direct responsibility for processing, evaluating, and reporting of in-house cases, as well as consultation cases. During calendar year 2008, approximately 2500 bone marrow examinations were performed on patients with various hematologic abnormalities, and approximately 800 lymph node biopsies were examined. Over 800 consultation cases were reviewed by the hematopathology staff, including a wide variety of tissue sites and diseases. Fellows are encouraged to participate in ongoing Hematopathology Section clinical research activities.

A second year option may be provided for fellows with research interests and a desire to remain in academic medicine. The second year will allow more time for research, but will still include rotation on hematopathology services, the extent to be determined by the specific research interests and funding of each individual fellow.

The clinical and teaching responsibilities of fellows include regularly scheduled instructional conferences for pathology residents and informal and formal consultation with residents and faculty within and outside the pathology department. Fellows will have ample opportunity to learn and practice hematopathology and laboratory hematology within a clinical context. The fellow will have increasing levels of responsibility commensurate with their level of performance and will participate in the service, teaching and research activities of the Hematopathology Section.

The OHSU Department of Pathology contains a wealth of material for research and training in the area of hematopathology, including an extensive cell bank of hematologic malignancies collected over a 20 year period. A Hematopathology database is maintained which includes a summary of specimen types, diagnoses, immunophenotype, and relevant molecular/ cytogenetic data; this computerized file is available to hematopathology trainees for educational and research purposes.

Applicants must have completed 4 years of AP/CP training or 3 years of AP training.

The stipend is commensurate with the year of postgraduate training.
