Cytopathology Fellowships

The Oregon Health & Science University Department of Pathology offers a one year, ACGME-approved fellowship in cytopathology. The program is designed to provide comprehensive training in cytopathology with emphasis on the performance and interpretation of fine needle aspiration biopsy, the integration of surgical pathology with cytology.

Proficiency in obtaining, preparing and interpreting aspirate samples is a major focus of our program. The program is integrated with the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center. Collectively the material available includes 10,000 gynecologic specimens, 5,000 non-gynecological specimens and 1,000 fine needle aspirations, most of which are performed by the cytopathology service. The fellow has increasing levels of responsibility commensurate with their level of performance and participates in the laboratory service, teaching and research activities. Ancillary facilities support electron microscopy, immunocytochemisty, flow cytometry, image analysis, molecular biology and other emerging technologies.
