SOFT TISSUE AND BONE TUMOR PATHOLOGY

Goals & Objectives: 

 

    The main goal of this elective rotation is to train residents in the interpretation and differential diagnosis of soft tissue and bone tumor cases. Residents will also spend time on this rotation reviewing and signing out Dr. Mansoor’s consult cases, which are related primarily to soft tissue and bone pathology. They will be expected to order or obtain special studies, immunohistochemistry and incorporate cytogenetics in their reporting of such cases. Specific goals and objectives are organized around the following core competencies.

 

  1. Patient Care

Residents are expected to demonstrate a thorough understanding of pathologic diagnosis and differential diagnosis and its impact on patient care.

2.      Medical Knowledge

Residents must demonstrate a basic understanding of Applied anatomy and histology, and a detailed knowledge of the use of molecular genetics in soft tissue tumor pathology. Residents must become familiar with all of the antibodies used in routine immunohistochemistry, including proper controls and interpretation.

3.      Practice-Based Learning And Improvement

Residents are expected to make use of on-line information (both internet and local network) in gathering information relevant to their cases. This includes gathering published references and relevant images, as well as preparing documentation and presentation materials. Residents will also be using the text and reference books to learn about the differential diagnosis.

4.      Interpersonal And Communication Skills

Residents are expected to be able to prepare clear and concise final reports, and to communicate and discuss results to clinicians.

5.      Professionalism

Residents are expected to be dedicated to the completion of all cases and other assigned tasks while they are on the service. Furthermore, residents must be cooperative, courteous, and dependable. They are expected to adhere to hospital regulations regarding patient confidentiality.

6.      Systems-Based Practice

Residents must learn about cost-effective approaches to the practice of surgical pathology. They are also expected to learn about laboratory costs and professional billing issues.

 

 

Duties & Responsibilities:             

 

 

1.      Residents are assigned cases everyday. They will review microscopic sections, order relevant immunohistochemical stains and prepare the final diagnostic report. In addition, the resident should gather necessary clinical and/or radiologic data that are important for rendering a diagnosis on an assigned case.

2.      Unless excused for a conference or other assignment, residents are expected to sit with the staff while cases are reviewed and diagnoses rendered.

3.      Read current articles and updates on Soft tissue tumor and bone pathology. Present interesting cases at one of the daily surgical pathology conferences, and monthly surgical pathology speciality conference.

4.      Review interesting cases in Dr. Mansoor’s slide collection

 

    

Supervision & Evaluation:

 

  1. The resident will be observed closely while working at the microscope.
  2. The quality of reports prepared by the resident will be monitored throughout the rotation.
  3. Residents are evaluated at the end of rotation with regard to the following core competencies:
