PROFICIENCY MILESTONES AND FORMATIVE GOALS

Purpose:
This policy defines a set of competencies that are used on individual rotations for formative
evaluations of OHSU residents. The intent is to delineate specific and critical areas for
formative evaluations without creating excessive detail or complexity. Each competency
consists of a relatively discrete, measurable, agreed upon, realistic, and time-bound goal
that both faculty and trainees can use as milestones to measure learning progress. Through
direct observation, testing or other methods, the faculty will evaluate the resident and
document specific competency when it is achieved with their signature. The ACGME
core competencies involved in each evaluation are identified with the following abbreviations:
Patient Care (PC), Medical Knowledge (MK), Practice based learning and Improvement
(PBL), Interpersonal & Communication Skills (ICS), Professionalism (P), System Based
Practice (SBP).
