HEALTHCARE

Insurance Benefits
OHSU residents/fellows are entitled to medical, dental, vision, prescription and life insurance coverage, with options for disability, AD&D and family coverage. See the GME website for details: http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/education/schools/school-of-medicine/gme-cme/gme/employment/index.cfm

Preventative Care
OHSU encourages all trainees to obtain recommended healthcare screenings and to establish a PCP within the first three months of training. Trainees will be allowed a minimum of four ½ days off per year to be used for preventative care or other non-urgent healthcare appointments for themselves, their children, or other family members needing assistance.

Trainees should select their ½ days off at the beginning of the academic year and report these times to the program coordinator. Student fellows and residents should schedule these days to correspond with CP or Autopsy rotations on days when there is no assigned call. Fellows will coordinate scheduling their ½ days off with their program director and coordinator. These days will be scheduled at the beginning of the academic year to facilitate trainees’ ability to preschedule preventative or other non-urgent healthcare appointments.

Program directors and other faculty will be informed of the dates by the program coordinator and will treat the time as protected time, free of clinical responsibilities.

Program coordinator will deduct sick time in accordance with the amount of time the trainee takes off for healthcare appointments. If a trainee does not choose to use the time for healthcare appointments, he or she should notify the program coordinator to update the schedule. If non-urgent medical appointments need to be scheduled on an alternative day, the trainee should notify the program coordinator of the change in date. The trainee should endeavor to complete all preventative care and/or other non-urgent medical appointments during the four prescheduled ½ days off unless more frequent care is required. (See Chronic or Other Health Problems)

Urgent Care
Trainees needing urgent medical care should not delay obtaining care due to service responsibilities. They should notify the director of their rotation or attending on call, copying the program director and the chief resident. Service coverage will be arranged as needed.

Chronic or Other Health Problems
OHSU is committed to fostering an environment where residents and fellows get the healthcare they need. A trainee who has chronic or other health problems needing frequent care should discuss treatment-scheduling needs with their program director, and apply for FMLA or OFLA if necessary (see Family Leave Policies). Trainees who need advocacy or are not comfortable discussing their scheduling needs with their program director should contact the GME Office or the OHSU Residency Wellness Program.

Trainees with mental health concerns or mental health care needs are encouraged to get the care they need and should contact the Residency Wellness Program.

Privacy for OHSU Employee Patients
Trainees who elect to receive their health care at OHSU Hospitals and Clinics may contact the Anatomic Pathology Manager to request that their names be removed from any samples processed through surgical pathology's grossing lab on a case-by-case basis. This would effectively shield trainees from having their samples identified by anyone in the grossing lab, including other trainees. However, due to the functionality of the current Hospital Information System (HIS), the patient’s name and medical record number are merged and restored automatically. Therefore, slides will be delivered directly to faculty for sign-out, bypassing resident/fellow review. The AP manager will make every possible effort to coordinate with appropriate faculty to maintain confidentiality throughout the process.
