| METHOD FOR CHROMOSOME ANALYSIS AT AUTOPSY 1. Take a plastic screw-top tube and fill one-third full of sterile normal saline without contamination. 2. Select an area of skin of the chest of the patient--possible from the junction of the Y incision. 3. Alcohol-clean this area and let it air dry. 4. Flame sterilize a tooth forceps. 5. Select a clean scalpel blade, unwrap and mount it on a handle but do not sterilize it. 6. Using these instruments, take a strip of dermis and epidermis about 1 cm long. Include entire thickness down to fat but do not include fat. 7. Put this specimen in the plastic tube without contaminating it if possible. 8. Do not freeze or refrigerate the specimen; it is okay for up to three days. 9. Send the specimen to Dr. R.E. Magenis' lab as soon as possible (Medical Genetics, CCD). |
