GUIDELINES FOR THE AUTOPSY SERVICE AT THE OREGON HEALTH SCIENCES UNIVERSITY

ON WHOM IS AN AUTOPSY PERFORMED?

Assuming that an authorization permit is properly completed, the Department of Pathology will perform an autopsy on all inpatients who are not under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner's Office. At the discretion of the Prosector we will also perform postmortem examination on all persons who have received definitive care at Oregon Health sciences University prior to death and on those cases released by the Medical Examiner's Office to this institution. Following consultation with the prosector a body may be embalmed prior to autopsy. An autopsy will not be performed in the he following situations:

    1.    When there is knowledge on the part of the prosector of coercion in
           obtaining an autopsy permit.
    2.    When there is knowledge by the prosector that a family member of any
            priority class equal to or above that of the permit-signer objects
            to the autopsy.
    3.    When restrictions imposed on the performance of an autopsy prevent
            an examination which is adequate to answer pertinent questions.
    4.    When the deceased has not received definitive care at the Oregon
            Health Sciences University for a major disorder related to death.
    5.    when the prosector has serious questions about the legality or
            propriety of an autopsy permit.
