| CONFIDENTIALITY Any right to confidentiality of medical or other personal information possessed by a living patient are assumed by the next-of-kin giving autopsy permission and/or assuming responsibility for disposition of the body after the patient's death. Only that person, other close relatives, involved attending or house staff, appropriate medical students, and representative of the Medical Examiner are entitled to information obtained from the autopsy. It is departmental policy, however, to make all appropriate educational use of the autopsy consistent with the privacy rights of the patient and family. Accordingly, by arrangement with the attending pathologist, autopsy attendance may be allowed, from time to time, to other medical personnel such as nursing staff or paramedics With these occasional exceptions, attendance by other than physicians, medical students, and morgue personnel is inappropriate. Friends or associates of the deceased, the press, the public, and public officials other that the M.E. are not to receive autopsy information from the Pathology Department with out written consent of next-of-kin. |
