Growth Characteristics:Beta hemolytic on blood agar. PYR negative. CAMP positive. Lancesfield group B can be determined by latex agglutination.
Test Profile:catalase negative. Incubation of clinical specimens in selective media for 50-20h before antigen testign will allow for detection of light colonization (Manual of Clinical Microbiology, 7th ed. p. 286).
Description:aerobic The leading cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis in US. Also associated with postpartum infections. Diabetes mellitis, cancer and HIV infection predispose non-pregnant adults to bacteremia, endocarditis, skin and soft tissue infections and osteomyelitis caused by Group B strep.
