How PARC works...
DNA spiral

1. Alcohol dependence and DNA

PARC focuses on understanding how the make-up of our DNA -- that is, our genes -- contributes to our risk for alcohol dependence.

Because it’s hard to do some kinds of research with humans, most PARC investigators use laboratory mice as models. As with people, some mice like to drink alcohol, and others don’t. Mouse genetics can be manipulated, which is a big advantage for genetics research.  We can breed special mice with certain genetic profiles, and we can also influence whether certain genes are active by, for example, changing a mouse's diet.
