Fish Oil as an adjunct therapy for depression in multiple sclerosis
Sponsor: National Institute of Aging (NIA)/National Institute of Health (NIH)
Principle Investigator: Dr. Lynne Shinto
The MS Center at Oregon Health & Science University is looking for people with MS who suffer from depression to participate in a research study. The 3-month pilot study will attempt to determine how taking omega-3 fatty acids affect symptoms of depression. Participants must be between 18 and 65 years old, been diagnosed with relapsing/remitting MS, and on current treatment for depression.

Assessment of Nutrient Biomarkers in Subjects at Risk for Dementia
Principal Investigator: Gene Bowman,ND
Length: 6 weeks Visits: 3
Purpose: To compare reproducibility of a validated food questionnaire
against plasma measures of nutrient status in patients with memory deficits
versus those without. Other descriptive explorations include: 1)
determining the more reliable of these two Œinstruments¹ (i.e., FFQ or
plasma nutrient panel) in predicting biomarker endpoints, and 2) determining
directional gene-nutrient associations.
Study design: Participants will have their blood drawn at screen, baseline,
and 4 weeks. Screening will characterize study population, baseline and 4
week visit involves completing a food and exercise questionnaire.
Seeking Volunteers:
* Age 55 and older
* Amnestic-MCI with CDR <=0.5 and MMSE >= 24
* Normal healthy controls with MMSE >= 26
* Generally in good health
Study Care & Reimbursement: All study related visits are provided at no
charge.

Hypochlorhydria and Homocysteine in Mild Cognitive Impairment
Principal Investigator: Gene Bowman, ND

Purpose: To determine the relationship between stomach acid levels and
nutrient status in the blood.
Seeking Volunteers:
* Must have participated in Nutrient Biomarker study described above
* Age 55 and older
* Amnestic-MCI with CDR <=0.5 and MMSE >= 24
* Normal healthy controls with MMSE >= 26
* Generally in good health

Meditation or Education for Alzheimer's Caregivers: Stress and Physiology
Principal Investigator: Barry Oken, MD.
The OHSU Neurology department is looking for primary caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease to participate in a stress intervention study. The study aims to see if a mind-body intervention called Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), or an education class, or respite (time off) from caregiving, can reduce stress in primary caregivers of people with dementia. Participants must be 50-85 years old, caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease, willing to be randomized into any of the three interventions (meditation class, education class, or free respite), and willing to attend three in-person assessments in addition to the classes.
For more information, contact Aisha Kudura or Dan Zajdel at 503-494-5650.
